Sponsored by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Common Ground & Figures in the Dust is a dance piece
focusing on the politics of agriculture. Both are dance/media works using a digital process
of blending recorded text, visual images and music. They aim to celebrate the poetry and
politics of California Agriculture.
"Figures in the Dust is inspired by John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, and explores
the prejudices, struggles, and desires affecting farm workers of the Salinas Valley in 1930’s",
said Fran Spector Atkins, Artistic Director of Spector Dance in Monterey.
"Common Ground is based on interviews with 12 individuals working in California agriculture
today and explores current tensions in agriculture, including immigration, land development,
environmental issues, and the new realities of competing in a world market", she added.
